Since the early 1950s calcium polysulfide has been used to relieve hardpan conditions in soil. In agriculture as well as in the restoration of septic drain fields, solutions using this common ingredient have been the only choice. It is a time-tested method that works well but the downside is the rotten egg odor and the caustic pH*.

Now there's a better way.

Septic Perc and Mega Bio were created as eco-friendly solutions to common problems that can cause a septic system failure. Septic Perc is labeled eco-friendly because it reduces chemical contributions in the air, water and on land. We are proud to manufacture a product that is earth-friendly and encourage our customers to engage in eco-friendly habits by carefully choosing products (like ours!) that are good for the earth and our surrounding environment.

So, what is pH and why does it matter?

pH is a measure of how acidic/basic water is. The range goes from 0 - 14, with 7 being neutral. A pH of less than 7 indicates acidity, whereas a pH of greater than 7 indicates alkalinity. Since pH can be affected by chemicals in the water, pH is an important indicator of water that is changing chemically. Each number in the chart below represents a 10-fold change in the acidity/basicness of the water. Water with a pH of five is ten times more acidic than water having a pH of six.

 

pH is an important measurement of water. The U.S. Geological Survey takes a pH measurement whenever water is studied. Not only does the pH of a stream affect organisms living in the water, changing pH in a stream can be an indicator of increasing pollution or some other environmental factor.


What does this have to do with my choice of drain field products?

Properly working septic system drain fields process effluent before it ever returns to the local water table, but a malfunctioning system can sometimes affect the local streams, rivers and lakes. Septic Perc has a pH around 7 making it more Eco-friendly than other, older style lime-sulfur products. You can see by the chart above that 7 is about the pH of stream water.
